Security is a service you rely on when something goes wrong, so it is worth checking a supplier before you need it. Use this checklist when you compare companies.
1. Check Whether They Are An SIA Approved Contractor
The Security Industry Authority runs the Approved Contractor Scheme. It is voluntary, and companies that join are assessed against independent standards and inspected. Approval is for specific activities, such as security guarding, so check the register to see what a company is approved for. You can read the SIA's own description of the scheme on GOV.UK, and see how to check ours on our SIA Approved Contractor page.
2. Ask How They Check Officers' SIA Licences
Anyone doing licensable work, such as security guarding or door supervision, must hold the right SIA licence. Ask how the company checks licences, how often, and whether you can see the licence numbers of the officers it will send. Our guide explains how to check a security guard's SIA licence.
3. Look For Recognised Certification
Independent certification shows that a company is audited, not just self declared. Examples include ISO 9001 for quality management and SafeContractor for health and safety. We hold both, are RISQS verified and are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office.
4. Confirm The Insurance
Ask for proof of public liability and employers' liability insurance, and check the level of cover suits your site or event.
5. Ask About Training And Briefings
Licence training is the minimum. Ask about site specific induction, briefings before each shift or event, and refresher training for the team.
6. Understand Supervision And Cover
Who supervises the officers, how often do they visit and who do you call at night? Ask what happens if an officer is ill or does not arrive.
7. Ask For References And Case Studies
A good supplier can show work for clients like you. For example, our work at Wembley Stadium is described in our Wembley Stadium case study.
8. Get A Clear, Itemised Quote
The quote should show the hours, the number and type of officers, the rates, and what is and is not included. A price that looks far lower than the others deserves questions, because wages, training and licence checks are where costs get cut.
9. Check Reporting And Communication
You should know what you will receive after each shift or event, and who your single point of contact is.
